Taboo Postpartum Truths

Postpartum depression, although still largely misunderstood, is becoming a mainstream term. Many people are now recognizing that some women may have a different difficulty after having a baby than the 'baby blues'. But, what if you don't have postpartum depression or any of the other perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and something still feels wrong? This is exactly what happened to me and I didn't know what to call it.


Cue postpartum regret. Marissa Zwetow, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, discusses her experience with not feeling like she fit with any of the PMAD diagnoses. She describes postpartum regret as "that feeling of dissatisfaction and unhappiness with the demands of motherhood and the changes that come with this life transition."


Having a baby is a huge life transition, and one that nobody can accurately prepare for. I certainly was never told about any difficult aspects about parenting. I
